Queen Elizabeth II has passed away this Thursday, at the age of 96.

The sad news was confirmed in a statement put out by Buckingham Palace, after reports earlier on Thursday about her being in ill health.

“The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon,” the statement started. “The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow.”

Now that the Queen has indeed passed away, what protocols are in place for the country? Who will succeed Queen Elizabeth II?

Throughout the history of the British monarchy there has always been a succession plan, which has gradually changed as the world has developed and become more of a technological society.

These plans ensure that a series of measures will become active once it becomes official that the Queen has died.

What is Operation London Bridge?

According to The Guardian, Operation London Bridge is the name of the measures for the passing of a reigning monarch in Britain.

Liz Truss took office as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom on Monday, meeting the Queen as part of the procedure, and she would have been one of the first to be notified.

A message along the lines of “London Bridge is down” was passed from the Queen’s private secretary to Truss, who would then ensure that the 15 nations where the Queen remains head of state are informed.

With the media then free to report their own stories and pay tribute to the deceased monarch, the public are then be informed in much the way they are about any other newsworthy items, either via the internet or television.

Who will succeed Queen Elizabeth II?

After spending what feels like a lifetime in waiting for his moment, Prince Charles will officially become King of Great Britain.

On the evening of the Queen’s passing, Charles is scheduled to make a speech to the nation in which he will address the death, all before being proclaimed King the next day.
