Real Sociedad secured a historic victory at Old Trafford on Thursday night, defeating Manchester United 1-0 in their Europa League opener courtesy of a controversial Brais Mendez penalty.

It was a sombre Old Trafford that hosted this game, following the news of the death of Queen Elizabeth II earlier in the day, and an impeccable minute’s silence was held ahead of kick off.

There weren’t too many chances for either side in the first half, although Cristiano Ronaldo did head the ball into the back of the net, only for that to be ruled out for offside.

There were more chances at the beginning of the second half, with Bruno Fernandes and Ronaldo almost connecting and with Takefusa Kubo and Alexander Sorloth almost doing the same at the other end.

Then, in the 57th minute, came the moment of controversy as a handball penalty was awarded to Real Sociedad, even though the ball hit Lisandro Martinez‘s arm after first striking his knee. Yet, Brais Mendez didn’t care and confidently fired past David de Gea.

Manchester United had chances to equalise through Ronaldo, Casemiro and Jadon Sancho, but Alex Remiro put in a good performance and the Basque side held on for a crucial three points in this group.
