Aware that a delay could result in a heavy punishment, former New England Patriots player Rich Ohrnberger preferred to cause a car accident and have a good excuse to be late for a team meeting.

The offensive lineman woke up late and would not arrive on time to a meeting with Belichick; if he was late, he would have to suffer the consequences, so he took the opportunity, saw a car in not so good conditions and caused the crash… the perfect pretext to be late.

The former Pats player, selected in the fourth round of the 2009 NFL Draft, told his adventure to “The Hartman And Rich O Show” and assured that he provoked the accident himself so as not to face the anger of the head coach.

Aboard his Chevy Tahoe, Rich knew he wouldn’t make it in time and, with a coach as strict as Belichick, he didn’t want to risk being cut from the team, but he was terrified.

“I had this sinking feeling in my stomach, I was thinking ‘they’re going to cut me,'” recalled Rich Ohrnberger, who suddenly had an opportunity appear, not the best, but one that would save him from reprimand or suspension. He saw a van in terrible condition and decided to crash it, so there would be a pretext for being late.

Rich Ohrnberger chose a dented van to crash

“I’m coming down this little incline that takes you to the first stoplight. I have to turn right to get to the stadium for the morning meeting, but I see a church van in front of me that’s all dented up, and it’s got black smoke coming out of the tailpipe, and I thought, ‘I’m going to hit this car.'”

And while he didn’t think about the damage he might cause to the driver of the other car, in that case an elderly man, who was not hurt or affected, Rich was able to save himself that day, as he was late, but on the pretext of not being punished by the head coach.
