Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr, who lost his father in 1984 when he was killed in Beirut with two shots to the head by Islamic extremists in the midst of the Lebanese civil war, is more than moved by the massacre in Uvalde, Texas, where at least 18 children and three adults were killed at a Texas elementary school.

Poignant statement

Therefore, amid tears, the coach launched a strong appeal to U.S. senators to put an end to this type of events.

“Since we came out of the last shooting, 14 children were killed within 400 miles of here, and one teacher. In the last 10 days, we’ve had elderly people of color murdered in a supermarket in Buffalo. We’ve had Asian parishioners murdered in Southern California. Now we’ve had children murdered in school,” he said at a conference prior to his team’s NBA playoff game.

He demands answers from politicians

Then, angered by the lack of strong measures to curb the acquisition of firearms, Kerr even pounded the table in the press room from where he was directing a message to the media.

“When are we going to do something? I’m tired. I’m so tired of coming up here and offering condolences to the devastated families out there. I’m tired of the moments of silence. Enough,” he emphasized.

And without further ado, the renowned coach went straight to Republican senators and their leader, Mitch McConnell, whom he demanded to reform gun laws in the United States.

“Are they going to put their own desire for power before the lives of our children, seniors and parishioners? Because that’s what it looks like. That’s what we do every week. I’ve had enough. I’ve had enough,” he said.

And finally, he asked Americans to reflect on a situation that could affect them at some point.

We’re going to play tonight, but I want every person here, every person listening to this, to think about your own child or grandchild, mother or father, sister or brother. How would you feel if this happened to you today? We cannot become numb to this. We can’t sit here and just read about it and go well, let’s have a moment of silence. Yay, come on Dubs. Come on Mavs, come on. That’s what we’re going to do. We’re going to play a basketball game,” he concluded.
