Kyrie Irving returned to action when the Brooklyn Nets took on the Memphis Grizzlies at the Barclays Center. However, following his anti-Semitic remarks on Twitter his return was again shrouded in controversy.
Ahead of the game, a group called the Black Hebrew Israelites decided to show their solidarity with Irving marching dressed in purple sweatshirts with gold details and are known as the black Jews.
The group, which has been deemed a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center, preach that they’ll are the true Israelites of the Bible, as they point out that the “so-called Jews” stole their identity and birthright.
In fact, New York Times journalist Sopan Deb further elaborated on the matter quoting directly from one of their manifestos.
“The truth about anti-Semitism. They say that blacks and Hispanics are the ’12 Tribes of Israel’. You are the children of the slave trade. We are not anti-Semites, we are Semites,” Deb elaborated.
The group was formed in 1960 and has been allegedly laced with anti-Semitic, anti-LGBTQ+, xenophobic and misogynistic overtones.
What happened on court
Irving‘s return went as smoothly as it could with the Nets winning 127-115 with Irving scoring 14 points in 26 minutes.
“I felt good. I missed my teammates, missed the coaching staff…” Irving said after the game.
“It felt good to get this game out of the way. Now we can move forward with the rest of the season.”
