Most NFL fans figured that the Dallas Cowboys this week would be preparing for an NFC divisional playoff game at AT&T Stadium against the Detroit Lions — a team the Cowboys defeated during the regular season. But that’s not how things unfolded for the Cowboys, who are instead licking their wounds following a disastrous first-round exit to the Green Bay Packers.

A season that began with Super Bowl hype ended in more disappointment for Dallas — and many have pointed the finger squarely at quarterback Dak Prescott. The anti-Prescott crowd can point to one statistic in particular to make their case that Cowboys owner Jerry Jones should jettison the 30-year-old as soon as this offseason.

Prescott’s playoff winning percentage

The Cowboys’ loss to the Packers was the fifth playoff defeat of Prescott’s career — in only seven games. This ties him with Alex Smith and Billy Kilmer for the worst postseason record for a quarterback in NFL history — among signal-callers who made at least five playoff starts.

Although Prescott had a strong second half on Sunday and finished with only his second 400-yard game of the 2023 NFL season, the damage had long been done once Dak started to cook after halftime. Prescott threw two interceptions in the first half and saw one returned for a touchdown as the Cowboys fell behind 27-0. He ultimately rallied to toss three touchdowns to tight end Jake Ferguson, but those were garbage-time scores that only served to make the margin of defeat a little more respectable.

Will Dallas move on from Dak?

If Jones sours on Prescott and decides he cannot be the Cowboys’ quarterback long-term, it’s likely he will have to wait until the three-time Pro Bowl selection’s contract expires. The 2024 season is the final year of Prescott’s contract, and his $59.5 million cap hit — the second-largest for any NFL player — makes him practically untradeable.

Prescott led the NFL with 36 touchdown passes this season against only nine interceptions. Even though he unraveled in the playoffs once again, the 48-32 defeat to the Packers made it clear that Prescott is not the single biggest problem facing the Cowboys. Jones could decide to extend his quarterback’s contract and fortify the defense or simply overhaul the coaching staff instead.
