The champion Kansas City Chiefs (17-10 over the Baltimore Ravens) and the San Francisco 49ers (34-31 over the Detroit Lions) will play in Super Bowl LVIII in Las Vegas. The fight for the Vince Lombardi, the great celebration of sports in the United States of America, will measure the best player in the world, Patrick Mahomes, against the best team, the ‘Niners‘. There is almost no better matchup, and another remarkable chapter in sports history may be written. That of the great American dream. That of a player who has already broken all the rules that seemed to be established in the book of the NFL: Brock Purdy.

History says that quarterbacks – a position that dominates the game, both on and off the field (the highest paid) – are the perfect prototype. College stars, the center of attention and the main event when the games begin. Purdy has changed all that. The last pick in the 2022 NFL Draft (number 256), was only supposed to be known for being “Mr. Irrelevant”.
However his life changed in December 2022. San Francisco gave him the opportunity and his parents, who had bought tickets to see Tom Brady... saw their son take center stage. He stepped out and the rest is history.
“Man, it’s Tom Brady…. He’s reigned, he’s won all those SuperBowls and to have him come up to you and say hello and congratulations is unbelievable,” he said that afternoon.
A fabulous comeback
To get to Nevada was no easy feat for San Francisco. They ran into a brilliant Detroit Lions team, who relied on their tremendous running game. It was another story of fighting back for Purdy and the Niners, as they overcame a 24-7 deficit to run out 34-31 winners.
Purdy finished with 267 yards passing (64.5% conversion) and a touchdown pass. He brought balance to an offense that ended up coming back thanks to the effectiveness of Jake Moody on field goals, Brandon Aiyuk avoiding an interception and being “deadly” in the end zone.
After that the defense took advantage of Detroit’s risky calls on fourth down to book their place in the Super Bowl.
The toughest challenge: Mahomes’ dynasty
However, the great story has its last chapter in the most difficult of battles. That of beating the ‘final boss’ in video games, the phenomenon Patrick Mahomes and his two-time champion Kansas City Chiefs.
It’s a repeat of the 2020 Super Bowl(31-20), but things are different. The Chiefs have less talent, but they are skilled competitors. They beat the Ravens after a strong outing by Mahomes with Travis Kelce (to the delight of Taylor Swift) and the running ability of Isaiah Pacheco.
Then came their stout defense. Lamar Jackson only found easy plays with Zay Flowers, a rookie, and the Ravens went down without a fight, which means it’s Mahomes and Purdy in the final battle.
