The weather at MetLife Stadium was very challenging for the start of NFL Week 16 as the New York Jets lost by a score of 19-3 to the Jacksonville Jaguars. Not only are we talking about the storm and wind that were present throughout the game, we are also referring to the severe animosity that the home fans showed to their starting quarterback Zach Wilson.
Zach Wilson, public enemy #1 of Jets fans
The second overall pick of the 2021 Draft has become the #1 enemy of all Jets fans who every time Wilson threw a pass, he was overwhelmed with loud boos that were the only constant in New York’s offense for almost three quarters of the BYU graduate’s performance.
Wilson finished the game completing half of the 18 passes he attempted for 92 yards with one interception.
Jets head coach Robert Salleh was patient with Wilson until there were just over two minutes left to play in the third quarter. At that point, he decided to bench Chris Streveler, who sparked his team with an offensive series that reached the Jaguars’ red zone but ended with no points.
Trevor Lawrence keeps the Jaguars in playoff contention
Speaking of the 2021 Draft, also present at the game was the first overall pick of that NFL’s magnum event, Trevor Lawrence, who, after a completely forgettable rookie season, has rebounded in 2022 and once again led Jacksonville to the win, its third in the last four opportunities.
Lawrence hit 20 of 31 passes for 229 yards, plus seven carries for 51 yards and a touchdown.
What’s next for the Jaguars and the Jets?
With this result, the Jets have severely diminished their playoff chances by dropping their record to 7-8, while with the same record, the Jaguars moved within a half-game of tying the Tennessee Titans for the AFC South lead.
New York’s next game will be on Sunday, January 1 when they visit the Seattle Seahawks, while Jacksonville will return to the field on the same day to visit the Houston Texans.
